Caroline
Norton
(1808-1877)
|
|
|
An English poet and prose writer, Caroline Norton was the daughter of poet
Thomas Sheridan. She began writing when she was seventeen. By the
time she was twenty-one, she started publishing her many novels, poetry and
lyrics, but she's better known for her writing about the poor treatment of
women.
She
was a key figure in the struggle for women's rights, and thanks to her efforts,
laws were passed that allowed married women to inherit and bequeath property for
the first time in British history.
