Omar Khayyam
(unknown-1122)

Born in Neyshabur, now Nishapur in Iran, Omar Khayyam was a mathematician, astronomer, and poet.  His poetry, primarily about human nature and romance, is among the world's best known works, but he's most famous for the Rubaiyat.  Approximately 1000 of these four line stanzas are ascribed to him.   As an astronomer to the royal court, he helped reform the calendar.
