Samuel
Daniel (1562-1619)
English poet and historian, Samuel Daniel was born near Taunton Somersetshire.
After attending the University of Oxford, he wrote many masques in the court of
James I. He continually revised and republished his works, hoping to
achieve a purity of language and style. He believed it was the duty of the
poet to focus on morality. He was a poet laureate from 1599-1619.
