Anne Bradstreet
(1612?-1672)

Anne Dudley Bradstreet, an early American poet, was born in Northampton, England.  She was the daughter of Thomas Dudley, governor  of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  In 1628, she  married Simon Bradstreet, who served as governor from 1678-86, and in 1689-1692.   The couple had eight children.

Anne was one of the most important poets in the colonies.  Her collection of poems, The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung up in America, is considered to be the first poetry book written in colonial America.
